Elements and Principles of Design

Image
Photo Powerpoint Description: This project was about exploring the different principles and elements of design. For this specific one, we took 12 pictures of these elements that we saw out in the real-world. They included line, shapes, texture, space, value, color, balance, movement, contrast, unity/variety, emphasis, and pattern. Then, we put the pictures into a powerpoint and come up with a grade-level specific definition. This is something even younger kids could do as a project.  Extension: A project that you could do for younger elementary grades, such as 2nd, to help teach the design concept of lines would be a line drawing with yarn or string. The students are given different types, colors, and lengths of string or yarn. Then they can arrange them on their paper into different types of line such as straight, wavy, etc. After they have it laid out, they glue the strings onto their paper. This project can be used to reinforce or teach how there are different kinds of lines a...

Introduction Footprint Project

Description: This project is a great introduction project and it allows students to use their creativity and get to know their classmates. The project starts with students tracing either their footprint or shoe print on a piece of construction paper. Then, the students start by writing their name in the middle of the footprint and add different pictures and items around the footprint to represent things that they enjoy doing and different things about themselves. They do this by using at least three different mediums (markers, crayons, colored pencils, pom poms, construction paper). Each student's footprint will look different as they will use their creativity to express themselves but each element should relate to something about them. For example, I had an airplane because I love to travel and I also had the Target dog because I work at target. Extension: I think that this activity could be extended into a writing assignment/project. After creating the footprint introduction, t...
